Mother's Day is a time to think about the legacies our mothers and grandmothers pass on. At LifeFone, we thought it would be fun to learn a bit of the history behind celebrating Mother's Day. Many believe that Mother's Day was developed as a commercial holiday by Hallmark or some other company to sell cards, candy, flowers, jewelry, and so on. Or, the belief is that it's a day solely to celebrate the domestic role of women in the home, and with a family surrounding them. However, neither of these perceptions is accurate.

With over 7 million adults providing long-distance caregiving to their loved ones, Americans are increasingly seeking ways to make the distance-gap less cumbersome. Providing care while living in the same city as your parent is taxing enough, but living an hour or more away only exasperates the doubt and concerns that arise when it comes to your parent receiving proper care.
Studies show that individuals who remain active and involved have an improved brain function and an overall sense of well-being. For many individuals, retirement brings with it a wealth of free-time but may also bring a feeling of being disconnected. Because people spend so many years juggling family, careers and other daily responsibilities, the downtime associated with retirement may lead to despair and depression. A way to combat this lack of purpose that comes with retirement is by volunteering. The benefits of volunteering are myriad and include the sense of well-being from helping others as well as having a sense of purpose cannot be discounted.
