Add Peace of Mind and Independence by Using A Home Medical Alert System

Home medical alert systems have been around for decades and LifeFone has been providing home safety alert systems since 1976.

These systems came into the public attention through the much-played television commercial that showed an elderly woman who’d fallen and was in need of assistance.

While that commercial highlighted some of the dangers that can befall the elderly, it drove home an important message if your aging loved one suffers a trip or fall or some other medical emergency and lives alone, he could be lying unattended for hours, or even days. The consequences of a loved one suffering a fall or medical emergency that could be life-threatening highlighted the need to equip aging loved ones with home medical alert systems and medical alert pendants. If your aging relative suffered a fall and was unable to reach a telephone or was too disoriented to remember to dial 9-1-1 the consequences could be dire. Equipping your aging relative with a home medical alert pendant assures that if he or she falls, at the touch of a button, help can be summoned.

In the event of a fall, the individual presses a button on the pendant and a call is sent to the home medical alert monitoring system to a LifeFone representative who will speak with your relative if they are able. If the senior cannot get to a telephone, to respond to the LifeFone customer care representative emergency medical personnel will be dispatched immediately to the home.

Interesting health facts that point to the need for a home medical alert system:

  • Thirty percent of all individuals 65-years-of-age or older fall each year
  • Sixty percent of all visits by people 65-years-of-age or older to the emergency room are the result of a trip and fall accident in the home
  • People who fall and are incapacitated for longer than 12 hours have a five times higher mortality rate than those who get immediate help
  • Currently, individuals 65 and older account for close to 50 percent of all hospital discharges

A study put forth by the New England Journal of Medicine shows that “medical alert system users had fewer and shorter hospital stays after subscribing to a service.” There was another study that showed a nearly 60 percent reduction in hospitalization times and mortality rates from those who had access to a home medical alert system. These study results offer compelling reasons how having a medical alert system can prolong the number of years a senior can remain independent in their own home.
